Description

This one goes to  shyamshriram... It's my first attempt at colour pencils so don't be too hard with me please I hate my scanner... he has eaten all the light areas, so it's not as good as the original drawing :(
Hope you'll like it, and hope Shyam will recognise himself

Colour pencils on A4 paper, 2 hours (and 30 minutes to adjust it in photoshop because of my nasty scanner)

Very nice portrait! So colourful, just like Shyams personality! And your colourpencil tegnique is good too, nothing to complain on here. :) He must be very happy for this! Wish I could see his face!

wow nice one Diane
if I may... I think I have seen this photo you used for ref. before
I think the neck is a tad short maybe if the shoulders were brought down a bit
and the yellow high lights in the hair I think are a little much
I know there is probably no way to go back and edit this since you used colored pencils correct?
but its great work good to see some color in your gallery
keep up the great work
(thumbup)

*EDIT* ok just looked at the ref.. http://img283.echo.cx/img283/9076/meagain8qc.jpg
yep his shoulders are like that
oh well :p
still great job
sorry everything I said was before reading your description

Wow! Thanks, you're very fast to comment
Pam : you're right about the neck, I've not enough worked on it , so it looks short :) For the hair, I wanted to do something colourful, but, as you said, it's a little... "too much" ;) Thanks for your crit

Comparing this to the reference photo, there is little to complain about. Well, except for what has already been said. I guess this comment is rather useless then, but I still wanted to say this is amazing work with the pencils, especially for being your first time.
Maybe, however, the strongly coloured area over his shoulder should have been toned down a little, it stands out a bit compared to the rest.
Anyway, good job with the colour pencils Diane! :)

I agree with Gary. Read only the critics that heps you to grow. Ignore the others.
Is a wonderful work. I dont care about perspective and all that things.
We must have and open mind. Art is in the artist inner feelings. The rest are only details.

Buana: Im sure you mean well, but we already know your views on photo copying. It's not fair on Diane, her work, nor her portfolio history to bring it up again and again. It gives her no credit, and possibly damages your own artistic integrity by overstating your case.

Art is art, is art m'friend...

Peace Buana

Xris, thank you very much
Buana : sorry if I've been rude in the PM, but I've done this drawing for a friend, it's not "art" with concepts or anything else, it's just a drawing :)

Well, I think it is great, and I doubt you'd waste printing paper and ink to print out a blown up photo of Shyam and trace it. You re too good without tracing, you dont need it and you know it.

The fact that Shyam's face is a bit narrower and longer than in your drawing, and that the part between the nose and jawline is a tad bit different, IMO, proves you worked hard on it, did not trace it and in the end achieved an almost perfect Shyam

Great technique of coloured pencils, love the shading, and the hair turned out really good

Thumbs up, Diane

Avatar ARTOONATOR

 06/14/05 @756

Nice portrait :) I think his face is actually a bit more skinny, and you made him look older. When you use colored pencils, try to variate the direction in which you are coloring throughout the face. By accenting so, you stimulate the dimensionality in a piece.
Anyway; It's nice.

I like the way you have used the yellow to the highlights, And the mix of the colors to give the light contrast. It has good lines and denition but I think you can soft some areas to give more softness to the skin texture. Maybe you
must dedicate more time for the next. But I really like your vision is so real.
It's perfect!

Nice one! Especially for a first try in colour pencils.
I suggest you don't use a black pencil when you're trying out a new colour pencil drawing, you can create dark values by hatching some green, red, yellow, purple and blue over each other. Try to use black for shading as little as possible. I know it's not always bad to use blacks, but you probably already know; the blacks you see are never entirely black.

I love what you did to the colours, especially the green at his ear and all :)
It's a great portrait!
+9/9
