A quickie I had started yesterday and I have finished tonight.
There are not lots of details because I've only spent 8 hours on it so I couldn't do a very detailed work.
Oh and.... IT'S NOT A FAIRY WITH LONG DRESS

It's some kind of a "comissioned" work (though I've only done it for fun for a friend who wanted to look like a pirate)
I've used a grid for proportions to make it look similar to the photo (small one unfortunately so it has been a little bit difficult).
I had also forgotten to mention that I've put the photo on the top in the end to fix the proportions issues (thanks for your comment gurcan

) and I've been surprised to see that the grid method was far from being perfect! (I was tired though ^^)

Clothes, ropes (is that the right word?), and bg are from imagination, I've taken a look at some moon pics to make it look right.
I've worked on 3 layers : one for the bg, one for the figure and one for the ropes.
I hope you'll like it

great work. i love the lighting. his face looks a little odd on the left side, but other than that, its fantastic! It really makes me want my Wacom to get here ^.^ you are very inspiring.

First let me say WOW...only 8 hours? Good Job! Secondly I noticed just a couple things that look a little off: the right side of his face looks great, but the left side (the side in the shadow) looks a little flat and kind of saggy. Also the left shoulder (again the one in the shadow) seems a little high, like it's pulled up next to his neck, but now I could just be getting picky. The watch is a nice affect though.

I second AH - I wish I had the skills to be able to crit this!

However, in my humble opinion, I think its a very pleasing piece

i agree that the left side looks a bit unleveled with the rest of his face - but only the incredibly discerning eye would catch this... the moon is beautifully rendered, and the entire piece has a dark and mysterious mood. Great imagination.

(oh and he's got two guns! cheater!)

It looks like overpainting that much realistic looking.I didnot like yellow points in sky and on moon.But overall is good 6/7

The lighting looks strange on the right side of the wooden part indeed, I had not paid attention to this, I'll fix it. I'll add some more highlights on the left side of the face

Gurcan : it's not an overpainting but I admit that I have put the photo on the top with low transparency to fix the proportions in the end... I wanted it to look the most realistic I could do, and I've been surprised to see that grid method was far from "perfect" (I'll try to upload the WIP tonight, I have to go to school for now)

btw I've spent 3 or 4 hours on the face and only 3 for the rest of the pic so it may look much more realistic indeed... that may be called "cheating" maybe but since I painted it all, I've put it in the painting category (it was a way to save time since I don't really have time to actually paint for myself)

arr he's not only piratey hes pretty too. he'd make all the ladies (and gay pirates) hearts aflutter and distract them with his good looks while he loots them blind.

btw the handle on the gun in the right arm is kinda off - such guns have more of a curve but apart from that its splendid (Sorry for the nit picking).

its a very romantic piece.

About the lighting issue on the right side : it should be brighter due to the fact that there is some fire near this wooden part. The ropes need some more work too...

Nice mood in this one,
I think those (purple) stars are a bit distracting.

The lighting issue on the right side has mentioned,
perhaps it's an idea to show some small flames peeking
from the right side (behind him)?

I think those ropes looke good, gives a good sense of perspective

I'm simply amazed by the quality of this speed painting (coz yes, for me 8 hours is a speed painting). Again, I'm amazed by the amount of details everywhere. It would have taken something around 2 weeks to get something like that. lol
I was very surprised when I saw that it was you who made this painting. I would have never guessed it was you only by the thumbnail. It's cool that you try new things.
okay...back to topic: The only real thing that bugs me is the way you made the stars. The whole image is quite realistic but the stars, no. Of course, the moon doesn't look realistic either because of its size but It looks cool like that.
oh, another thing (maybe it's been said already, too lazy to read the whole thread) but the lighting of the big rope doesn't match the overall ambiance. But I'm nitpicking, it's really minor.

p.s. I noticed your new avatar. is it a new painting you're currently doing?

Amazing Diane that you can do this quality work and call it a quickie. i always enjoy the fine details of your drawing. In this case I especially like the pirate's shirt and sash. Very well done!

Jordan : The stars have been done with my "stars" brush to save time so I've only spent..... 30 seconds on them

If it were a really finished painting, they would look more realistic indeed

But it doesn't really bother me since the ropes/fire/moon/shirt and wooden part of the boat are not really realistic

About the big rope : it's very far from the scene so it's not affected by the lighting in the same way

Thats really cool, ive never tried using a grid to help with the proportions of a face - but seeing what you've done from a small photo - i might give it a shot

Can i ask what (Wacom?) tablet you use - the website makes it very uncear which one is for illustrating, i need to start saving some money from now onwards if i want to get one.
