Description

Hi artists :) This is my new painting, "Morgan le Fay", based on the Arthurian Legend.
Morgan le Fay was an enchantress who practised lots of sciences and knew how to make poison (the little bottle she's holding contains poison. The moths are meant to represent the souls of her victims, attracted by poison - you can see some sparkling dust around them, coming from the bottle)

It was meant to be just a lighting exercise at first (I was playing with my wacom and a mirror) but I liked the colours so I've decided to turn it into a painting. But now, I'm VERY VERY tired of painting my face, so if anyone is interested in being painted, it would be great :) (I already have 5 models for a serie I'm doing about herbs, shrooms that has been used by witches, used in traditional medecine of that are meant to bring luck.... but I need more so if you're interested, just tell me :) )

Photoshop CS and my wacom
35 hours approx
no real refs used (I've just taken a look at some nightshots of streets, you can see them in the WIP thread). I've used a mirror as mentionned above. The hand was the hardest part to make, it's still not perfect (there are some flaws in the painting but I was tired to work on it so I've called it done) but I've really tried.
The tones are brown and green on purpose, the lightsources are candles (and a little bit of magical light, she's a sorceress :p ) so there's no real diversity in the colours and the contrast is not very high.

Btw, the internet optimised jpg compression is very very crappy, I've lost all the details in this version :( the contrast of the lights was better, the hair was more detailed, the skin had some texture but I can see nothing of that in this version....

the girl is done very lovingly, with great use of selective points of interest. i love the blockwork on the receding wall. just right. very, very nice.

This is absolutely stunning! Even if it is a "compressed jpeg," this piece is rich with detail and I absolutely love the subtler ones, such as the lace on her sleeve and the skulls on the larger moth's wings. Fantastic work! :)

Diane, this is very impressive. The lightning, details, perspective is spot on. I always wanted you to go all out with details on your digital pieces, and you've done that in spaded. Here's a tip: When shrinking it down for the web, you can also add a sharpen filter which can make the details stand out more :)

Excellent work. :) The anatomy is perfect and her expression is really good. Love the colors,composition and atmosphere. :)
My only critique is that you could have heightened a little more the higlights in some parts on her face and hair to stand out a little more the illumination effect that comes from the butterfly-firefly, because the backgrond lighting is a little hight and it is reducing depth to the scene and importance to the foreground. But this is only an opinion. +9/10

Beautiful work Diane,
I especially like the ambiance and the colour palette you've chosen

I have the feeling there is something slightly off with the hand.
the fingers flow directly into the knuckles, but there is some 'skin' missing in the area between the fingers where they meet with the knuckles.
Hard to explain lol

Anyhow, fantastic work + 10

I love everything! ^__^ But the big moth is my favourite part, you really made it look magical. (I just noticed the skulls on the wings. :o )
The skin is very nice, she is beautiful. The details on her dress is stunning. I have nothing else to say - you rule.

Amazingly beautiful! Luv the expression on the face ; the emotions just seem to pour out of her... Its like your painting has come to life with the last dab of your brush...

Fantastic! I dont see any flaw in it what so ever... My eyes are too distracted from the perfection in the colors and figures...LUVV ITT!!!!

it turned out great :) i prefer this version to the lighter one, i don't mind that a few details may have been lost in the left part. it still suits the mood a lot better

by the way, about loss of details in this version, why don't you save them as PNG's? i've heard there's less compressing going on then..

I'm gonna try to save it as a PNG file, that may be better indeed :) I'm kinda disappointed by the way it has turned once compressed, the lighting doesn't really look the same, I've lost lots of details... But when I've tried to sharpen it, it has looked awful, very grainy, so I've kept the compressed version without any filters. I'm gonna try that right now ;)

i have some reference photo's of myself posing facially like an orge...sort of like my avatar over there...if your interested i can send them to you...

now about the image...i think your lighting exercise was a huge success because the light sources are great and the attention to lighting detail is also top notch...it spreads a mood over the whole thing. the mist is rendered very well....like street light haze...wonderful piece really, nothing to tear apart, just trying to think of new ways of complimenting it...

EXCELLENT WORK, DIANE !!! (thumbup). I'm also one of those who have traced your WIP thread but can't believe the final result could turn out to be this great. Really sorry about the quality of the jpeg format. I really want to witness the details you mentioned as much as I can. It's true the hair has been made to less realistic than it should be.
What I like the best of this work is your performance. The scene looks ordinary at first, but since you have created a lot of tiny and elaborate details, it has created interesting feelings on viewers. Each they look at your work again they may realize something new, something interesting that they haven't notice before.
Sorry that I can't give you a ten +9/9

When I look at the close ups, I'm stunned how you reach a visual high realism, but in fact you're just suggesting it, that makes the great artist you are.
I like the dark version more because it makes her emotion stronger.+9

I really love the composition and attention to detail on this. I've looked over it a few times now, and everytime notice some other detail that I had missed before, the tear, the reflection of the moth in her eyes, the soul-moths around the poison, the skull on the wings, and the lace and pearls, it all just keeps me coming back for more. I see nothing wrong with the hands, on the detail images you posted, the perspective and the lighting on it looks great.
You've inspired me to go and try and get a few things that I've started finished off and posted. Thanks.

With her defined jawline and slender neck it's hard to believe that her fore arm is so thick as it gets covered by the lovely clothes. Her fore arm is huge!

Other than that all the other details are fantastic.

searcher : I see what you mean, the forearm is ok but the way I've done the clothes makes it look bigger than it should be.... I had meant to represent the wind filling the clothes at first but I've added some strands of hair in front of it and I've lost the original shape of the arm (I've paid more attention to details in the end so I've forgotten to look at the whole picture). Thanks a lot ! :)
