Description

First of all, sorry for having been away for so long (that won't be the last time though, I actually have a lot of work to do).

Mermaids have been lots of times described as beautiful and kind creatures. But that's not the way they are described in mythology. They are said to be crual winged creatures that turned into a crual mix between human beings and fish. They were singing to attract sailors then they eat them.
This is my own version of a mermaid/siren, a deep sea creature using photophore to attract preys.
Photoshop CS and a wacom intuos 3A4
No reference used (only doing some google search to see how the photophore of the anglerfish looks like) so there must be lots of issues but I like it as it is now :) Crits are very welcome though ;)
30 hours approx.
Edit : since you told me that it was not explicit, I've removed my question :) Thank you very very much for your comments ppl!

Wicked idea Diane! I love that angler fish touch. Nice perspective! that along with the lighting and darkness really give the illusion that you are down deep and that visibility is low...nice atmosphere. Lovely work.

I personally dont think this is explicit at all :)

Great image. The lightning effects are spot on. What really makes this image a hit is the expression on her face; You nailed it, hands down. +10 well deserved.

they should rename the g-spot to the d-spot (diane-spot)...+10

no need to activate the explicit content warning. We don't see her titties. This is my second favorite of your, my first being "lord of nightmares". But that doesn't mean I think it's not awesome, because it is. my main crit would be that I think she should have longer hair,(I don't think there are hairdressers down there..).
I like those things on her mouth, well, I like pretty much everything in this picture actually. I agree with Deankuhta about the D-spot thing...
Oh, and, even If She (it) doesn't breath O2, I think there should be bubbles somewhere.. but..
this is a master piece (as usual) that deserve a +9
Good work Diane! ;)

Exquisitely done, perspective made her more menacing by giving us a view of one of the many inept sailsmen whom fall into her trap. Hair is pretty wild, but it seems to need more on left portion. Unless you were going for a creepy bald sea creature, then it is spot on.

Wonderful technigue and great lighting,
I think the image could use something for the cherry on top.
Perhaps some bubbles, small fish swimming by, or just plain dirt floating by? just a thought.;)

okay, I'm going to say something now which would make me
unpopular, but this being an open and honest community, I think it's
a good thing to be honest, everyone has his/her own opinion right? and everyone
is entitled to say so...

The thing is, I think your (painting) works are getting a bit predictable.
You seem to be hooked on faces and one quarter of the upper body to show.
I think you are a lot more creative than to stick to this 'formula'
What I would love to see from you is some more radical perspectives, landscapes, buildings, storytelling, etc.
Don't get me wrong, you are some sort of a genius, but i think you are capable of so much more;)

I hope I'm not a partypooper:(

+ 10, because this painting is qualitative way up there

Thanks a lot for all your comments artists!

Wallace : I know what you mean, I'm damn lazy so when I have time to paint for my own pleasure (I have actually a LOT of work to do - professional projects - so I can't paint for me) I do what I love, so it's always creatures (upper part of the body, that may be due to the cinema studies I had done. Bodies are very often cropped ^^ ) with strange faces and things like that.... But I'll try to post different things aswell. That's just that I don't have time to do them for now ;)
About the dirt, I wanted to keep it simple (some artists told me that I had already added too many elements so I've stopped working on it) :)

Thanks again for your comments artists!

oh i'm absolutely lovin' this. it must be my favorite one of your artworks now. i love everything about how you've made the creature, the amount of detail, the expression on her face which is both dangerous and alluring. the green tone complements the atmosphere extremely well. nothing to crit. this is a masterpiece!

Wonderful work Diane...great! I mean you have really grown so wonderfully as an artist...great to see so much maturity...keep it up! it shows in your work...I love it...
Love the light effects...my only critic would be that , there should have been some bubbles or an effect of water...i feel shes standing upright...you know. But if you feel this is right...then it is...no one can take away the hard work you have put in this one...keep growing friend. :)

cheers!

Ah, the same concept with the light from the head as the anglerfish.
This is truly a different angle of the mermaid than the 'nice' tales. She is still beautiful though.
The lighting is good, and I really get the creepy feeling of beeing deep below the water surface, seeing her gliding out of the dark towards me... I'm glad I'm not a sailor.

Great pic Diane!

do what makes you happy if anything maybe do some dynamic poses with some of your figures..
doing landscapes and this and that blah I find boring :S
sorry, I like your portraits you make

Avatar mysticcat

 09/04/06 @311

Yup, I'm also one of those who have kept track of your WIP topic on this artwork and everything has grown so impressive. The first pic you showed looked... I guess... damn vulgar and had nothing special compared to your previous works. But the more you did, the more it grew different. And now it's incredible. I like the details on her face which makes her a truly deep sea creature. You must have had a careful reference I guess :).
7/7 (no other choice ).

Avatar Diane

 09/04/06 @429

Thank you very very much for your comments artists!

Pam : I find doing landscapes boring too ;) I should try to variate a little bit my work but since I'm doing pro work for very different things (can't post it here unfortunately :( ) I prefer doing what I like. And you're damn right, I'll do what makes me feel happy (I'll do more full body poses though, I know that I'm doing too much tight cropped pictures) because I'm gonna be crazy if I try to please everybody (everyone has different tastes!) Thankies!

Nah, I'm just kidding you gal.

I love the combination of your subject: the mermaid combine with other kind of fish that has a light source on its head like the one in "Finding Nemo". Maybe you should called it "Green Chimera". ha, ha, ha.

It is indeed an awesome image – the eyes are particularly unnerving.
The image is quite nightmarish with the hand reaching out towards the viewer.

Having, somewhat belatedly, visited your WiP thread, there were, however, some elements that you discarded along the way that I felt were very strong – longer hair, more of the hand, and the bubbles, were all elements I felt might have been included. The bubbles particularly I felt contributed to the sense of depth and mystery (the final gasp of a drowned mariner? gas from disturbed rotting corpses? or maybe she just farted – no scratch that last one!).

A great piece of work that will forever scar my idyllic image of mermaids!

the excess globes make little sense. The overhead lure is a very VERY sophisticated and nice touch, good instinct on that. i think a liitle more substance fading in around the edges ( as the globe's glow wears off) would add to the "depth" (pun intended) to the image. Amazing work none the less
