Description
Hi artists!I know that some of you wanted me to do a pencil drawing so here's the thing
The guy is the young king of a swamp tribe. He has some piercings and tattoos on his face showing his power. He has also the longest hair of the men of the tribe to claim his king status. He's wearing lots of snails shells (on his crown, clothes, necklace), symbol of his wisdom and perseverance...
Well, ok, I stop with my stupid stories
It has been done on the cheapest printer paper found in the supermarket so kill me for my lack of will (I didn't want to go to buy good paper... too lazy to walk out of my house).
A4 paper, 0,3mm HB mechanical pencil, 2B and 8B pencils, approx 30 hours.
The hardest part to do has been the blurry one! It had just killed me!
The upper part of the head looks very crappy because of the scan
I dedicate it to
Crits are very welcome!

Concept:Average |
Technical Skill:Very strong |
Impact/impression:Very strong |
Pros:The realism is outstanding, considering the materials that were used. The intricate details look absolutely wonderful, not only at the size in which is posted, but also the close-ups given in the WIP thread.
Though a reference was used for the composition and male figure, the "make-up f/x" Diane applied made it her own. The beard, the wardrobe, the shading of the male figure overall, all done with perfection. She has taken a reference photo of a stranger and made it into a personal reflection of her passion for character creation. Cons:The horse, as it has been mentioned and taken in stride by Diane, just doesn't seem to belong, or isn't as sufficient in detail as the male figure. It tends to distract the eye and make the piece confusing. It should either be more detailed, just be a shadowed backdrop, or have an intricately detailed landscape so as to compliment the male's perfection.
Though I am not against reference photos by any means, I think with Diane's elaborate imagination she could have altered more of the male's face to have it look less like the photo model. I think it is terrific that she was capable of xeroxing his likeness and creatively adding "make-up" to him and dressing him up as you would an actor, but I sense more in Diane's expansive mind. I believe she could have used multiple reference for the male... one for position, one for lips, her lover's eyes... something to make a one of a kind person instead of the likeness of the model in this composition. Overall opinion/feedback:I've enjoyed seeing Diane Özdamar progress in her artwork when I first spotted her quite a while back at CGTalk, doing digital paintings. But, I've never been so impressed by anything she's done before this. There's something about this piece that jumps at me. Her pencil renderings are awe-striking. I can only say selfishly and egotistically, this particuliar piece reminds me so much of when I was in high school drawing. I haven't done such elaborately detailed pencil drawings for about 15 years, and this piece brings back those memories.
There are artworks that inspire others to mimic their favorite artist's technique, theme, or composition. This piece, however, inspires me to use some recent funds and re-purchase the odd-number grades, 9B thru 9H, a larger Bristol pad, and get back to what made me escape in another world that I had created. The Young King is an exceptional piece of artwork that has moved me in the most profound way. Seeing it in its WIP stages to its grand finale, I just couldn't find words to express what I was seeing and feeling until now. It's hard to believe a standard, run-of-mill printer paper was used for this. But, as Diane has shown us, she can take us to a realm where this paper doesn't exist and places phantasy realism right before our eyes. |

Some crits - The hair looks a bit like a wig, and I don't like the horse in the background.
Also the head seems to be a little to big for the body.
other than that, it's beautiful.
I love the way you did his shirt, beautiful details!

Thank you so much artists!
Valera : the hair looks better on the original
About the head, it looks big due to the position of the body. It looked even bigger on the reference (or the guy has some anatomical problems
Andy : I had not noticed the eye thing, I could have worked more on it you're right

Nice work

About the background, I didn't want to add anything more to avoid making the king "disappear".
And as I've mentioned in the title, he's a "young king"
I'll finish the Vouivre, don't worry! I just don't feel like doing it for now

Im to lazy to read all the previous comments and the whole thalk in the WIP, but I just get caught in the details of the clothing and everithing that you made (from the back of your head, without reference?)
Its incredible, I just love to see some amazing pencil work, just feel better than the cold computer made.

That is so~!!~ amazing. The detail and the realism of it. It's brilliant . You have no idea how briliant that is. It's amazing!. So so so........ Wow. I love the whole picture. Specially the shading. I like the background with the horse how it sort of fades it out giving the Young King most of the attention.
This is just.. wow. I've never seen such .... WOW.
The hair is great, I like the shading used to make the plates in his beard ..Very realistic.
All together I just love it. THIS DRAWING IS AMAZING!.
+10 Rae .
