Description

Each night, he comes to Earth. He comes, following the nightmares way through the stars. Nightmares are there, waiting in the fog of this dark road. They try to reach his hands. He'll take one of them, the others will have to try again each following night.

The guy is not meant to look nasty, he must be handsome to trap his victims (for the ones who could ask why he is not a monster) ;)

Just a quick story :)

I've done it with no idea of what I would do at first, it was just a bad quick sketch that has become a painting. It was the first time I was painting spacescapes, it's very hard to do but I'm quite pleased with the result :) It was not intended to be realistic (it's still not intended to be realistic btw)
No refs used here, I've only taken a look at my left hand when I was drawing (then flipped it horizontally.... lazy me!)
I hope you'll like it, it has been hard to paint but it was interesting since it's the first time I was doing something like that :)
If you think that some parts could be improved, please tell me, I would like to fix the flaws. There must be tons of anatomy issues (I'm baaaad at it!) All crits are very very welcome!

Photoshop CS and a wacom intuos 3A4, approx 40 hours.

Thanks for viewing :)

You can take a look at the whole progress here : http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=372697

Hand edited on the small version and the closeups :)

If you don't see anything, just push the brightness of your screen, lots of details are lost if the screen is not bright.

wow fantastic.

I have two (very) minor crits,
the hair is just a bit flatty and the shoulder
definition is a tiny bit off.

The background is marvellous!

Thank you very much :)

About the hair, I didn't want to do something realistic (the whole painting wasn't intended to be realistic) but you're the second person that mentions it... maybe I should rework on it even if I wanted to make it look as it is now :)

Avatar pegahoul

Cool... the colors are wonderful!
Something bothers me bout the earth (don't know why, maybe because it looks more like a ball than a planet in space, but since you didn't intend it to be realistic... ^^)

Avatar pawlack

 07/03/06 @463

What about hairs - I have to disagree with crits about them. They are one of my favourite parts in your painting. They look very magic, and you just couldn't do them better ;)

Avatar Traff

 07/03/06 @478

About the hair… maybe I should rework on it even if I wanted to make it look as it is now… if you have achieved the effect you wanted then most definitely you should stay true to your original vision – even if you’d given him a multicoloured Mohican! As it is I agree with Pawlack I really like the hair. Any flatness in the shading seems to be a result of it catching some light source that the main figure is looking back at (or maybe it is radiating light itself).

Pegahol mentions the earth looks like a ball rather than a planet – maybe that could be helped by blending the darker part of the planet into the background more, so it is not so obviously defined.

The concept is great – and the execution is meticulous.

Diane , this is breathtaking. The colors are so beautiful and blended together so well and so seamlessly.I love the hurricane eyes on the planet ( well that's what they look like to me )And oh , I do love the hair. It's fantastic. You have created a stunning work of art.And you did all that ( save the arm ) without reffrences? Impressive.

a stunning painting, but not really my cuppa...(as andy says it). Personally, I don't like the color selection, but that's just me. The nebulas, planet and stars are really well done, I have no idea how you would go about painting that digitally...

A couple crits...I think the bottom portion could be cropped a bit. Seems to me that there is too much dress or whatever he's wearing. Also, the hair, although very cool looking, seems a bit flat.

Great painting Diane! Oh, I would recommend modifying the description to "he comes to Earth" rather than "he comes on Earth"....heh ;)

Ok, so I won't touch the hair anymore, I like it as it is now
About the planet, I should maybe rework on it....
I won't crop the bottom though, it would kill the composition. I have tried is and I was not satisfied with the result.
And I'm going to edit the description.... stupid me!

 07/03/06 @587

Diane, this is nice! One thing that bothers me slightly was his left sholder blade (the one facing us). Does the lighting on that seem a bit odd to you? I'm seeing a nice transition from his left arm to shoulder then a little oddness on the sholder blades before finishing up at his back.

It could be just me, you know -- I figured you'd appreciate the mention.

*whistles* Diane, your paintings really brighten my day (or in this case very very early morning (2:51am)). Your attention to detail is always beautiful. The face is stunning. The colours are brilliant and the concept is sound. This is one of the reasons i love being an artist - being able to fully appreciate work like this. No crits this time round my dear, fantastic work

I just went through your whole process over on CGTalk and one thing really stuck out at me. The lips are, well, beautiful. Not to say the rest of the artwork isn't beautiful, but the lips I thought were lips that you would find on a female, not a male... Well, I'm not really sure what I'm trying to get at, but they're just really nice lips. :)

Valera : I had not thought about Enayla's painting but I may have been influenced since I just love it! Maybe it reminds you of this painting because of the hands and colours (though mine are more "toxic";) or because of the starfield :)

he really looks like the lord of nightmare, this painting expresses a lot. i sort of attachs to me because has sentimental meaning at least to me, because of a weird phase i've been through a month ago or two. and the colors are really like... unsual.
congrats :)

Avatar curlyhair

 07/03/06 @787

I like his face and I'm greatfull that it is not some anime character, when you don't understand if it's boy or girl. His face lookes manly and it makes interestimg contrast with his long white hair and the pos.You know what I mean - he's not flirting and I like it
Colours're awesome. I think you could make a deeper shadow on his body
Your anatomy is not that bad , I feel some flaws but I'm a bad helper here - better get yourself a reference:)
Beautiful spacescape. I can hardly believe you didn't use any reference!
Now I'm probably gonna write something too smart for me - I'm not sure but I think the composition should stress more his destination - Earth. Cause till I read the description I didn't know that - the pass of his clothe is not enough I quess, try to play with his clothe direction - if you still have some will to touch it:)
Last crit (don't kill me) I think you should stress the hands on his clothe and probably add some more detailes there
Forgive me for criticism.
You're one of my favorite artists. I admire you and your work.
Just want to help if I can)

Wow Diane, this is amazing! I love the dinamic composition here.
From Alucard to Sephiroth, I'm one for long haired albino men, and I love to paint them too. I don't know what do you think about, but, in my opinion, eyebrows shouldnt be white as their hair is, but a bit darker... coz white eyebrows look ok on face closeup... but at the distance, gives the face a weird look, like mixing with flesh on a highlightening way, so it seems it's a weird bone there. Just a comment :3

Keep the good work and top marks from here.

Avatar Diane

 07/04/06 @441

Thank you very much for your comment Nell :)
About the eyebrows, it looks indeed a little bit off on the small version but I wanted to make them as white as his hair and eyelashes, I had not thought of what it would look like on a small version. The screen resolution also "eats" details, it looks much better when it's printed! :)

I think everyone's got it covered here, so I'll just say I like this very much so! Your job on the space portion is excellent especially for your first time. I mean the results are exceptional. The overall dreamlike feel and look to the image is the main reason I really take to it. Great job, and the closeups provide a great look at how much detail is really here.

Good god, my comment completely hides itself in this sea of commentaries! But that's ok, I really feel like I have to say something about this particular work.

Clearly you had a LOT of work painting this monstruous work, it's not only huge but also equally rich. The universe has a very silky feeling which suits perfectly the overall atmosphere. Altough the details of the "clothing" are stunning, beautifully colored and draw, I have to confess I'm not to keen about the painting you did on the body. It doesn't confer a very realistic feeling by looking a bit "plastic"... I hope you understand what I am trying to say here.

But that's about the only thing I can picky about. Overall it's obviously a very impressive work, I salute you : )
